APPLICATION OF INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS IN COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES: WITH REFERENCE TO AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY IN MALAYSIA

Abstract


Abstract The study was conceived to x-ray the practices in collection development strategies by International Islamic University Malaysia Main Library, in order to determine whether International Federation Library Association (IFLA) standard on collection development was adhered to or not. Structured interview was used to collect data from respondents. Purposive sample technique was used to select the sample for the study from staff of the IIUM Main library which consist of two (2) heads of divisions and nine (9) Faculty Liaison officers in the library. The findings revealed that the IIUM Main library has comprehensive collection development strategies and adapting them according to International Federation of Library Association, (IFLA), American Library Associations (ALA) and other international libraries. Recommendations such as the needs to put a good communication mechanism between both parties (liaison officers and faculty members) should be provided to improved or facilitate selection and acquisition process, emphasis should be to faculty members on the need to verify citations compiled before sending to the library in order overcome the problem of incomplete citations supply by faculty members and others.
