ASSESSMENT OF AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA FOR TEACHING HAUSA LANAGUAGE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KATSINA METROPOLIS

Abstract


This study assessment of availability and utilization of instructional media for teaching Hausa language in senior secondary schools in Katsina metropolis. Three objectives and corresponding research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of 102 Hausa teachers in 12 secondary schools in Katsina metropolis. Purposive sampling technique was used to select all the Respondents. The instrument used for data collection was structured closed ended questionnaire for Hausa teachers titled ‘Availability and Utilization of Instructional Media Questionnaire (AUIMQ)’. This questionnaire was structured as follows; for Availability: (Available, fairly available, not available), for utilization: (utilized, fairly utilized, not Utilize) and for Challenges: (extremely challenge, fairly challenge, not utilized). The instrument was given to two experts in the fields of Hausa Language and Test and Measurement, in the College of Education, Al-Qalam University Katsina for their views and comments so as to ensure its content and face validity. Based on their observations and suggestions, some items were reworded and corrected. Cronbach Alpha was used to establish the reliability coefficient of the instrument and the value obtained was 0.72. The analysis of data collected for the study was carried out using descriptive statistics of frequency, simple percentage for all demographic information and also to answer research questions. Findings from the study indicated that most of the instructional media like non projected aids, television, radio, mobile phone, pictorial aids data e.t,c were available while projector, language laboratory was not available in the study area. Thus, it was recommended that Government and school management should provide technological instructional media to help teachers communicate effectively with the students no matter the number, especially now that we are in technological age.
